Bankroll Management for Casual Players

How to size your bets so a session lasts as long as you planned.

IVInès VargaProbability & maths · Updated October 2026

Key takeaways

  • Bet 1–2% of your session budget per spin or hand
  • Set a win goal and a loss limit
  • Never move money from your savings mid-session

Size the session first

Decide the amount you are happy to spend, as you would for a concert ticket. That is your session bankroll. Everything else stays outside the casino.

Then size the bet

At 1% per bet, a $100 bankroll means $1 spins and a few hundred rounds on a low-volatility game. At 10%, it can be gone in twenty.

  • Low volatility: up to 2% per bet
  • High volatility: 0.5–1% per bet
  • Table games: 2–5% per hand

Stop rules

Write down a loss limit and a time limit. Use the casino’s own deposit and session limits, which are harder to override at midnight than a promise to yourself.
